Beetle Control in Tempe, AZ
Beetle control in Tempe, AZ depends entirely on the beetle, since a carpet beetle needs a source found, a pantry beetle needs food thrown out, and a palo verde beetle needs no treatment at all. Kekoa Pest Control names yours first, then tells you straight whether it is worth paying to treat.

Most people searching for a bug exterminator because of beetles have one of two very different experiences. Either a three-inch monster just hit the patio door, or tiny brown specks keep turning up in a closet or a bag of flour. The first needs no treatment. The second has a source somewhere in the house, and spraying will not fix it until that source is gone.

What beetles get into Arizona houses?
Carpet beetles. Adults are tiny, rounded and patterned, and they feed on pollen outdoors. They come in through open doors and windows or on cut flowers. The larvae do the damage. Fuzzy and slow, they eat wool, silk, leather, fur, feathers and pet hair, and generally leave synthetics alone.
Pantry beetles. Cigarette and drugstore beetles, sawtoothed grain beetles, flour beetles and warehouse beetles arrive in an infested package from the store. They then spread through cereals, flour, spices, pet food and candy. Tiny holes in packaging or fine dust on the shelf are the giveaway.
UC IPM says the black carpet beetle is more often a stored-food pest than a fabric pest in arid areas. It also says cigarette beetles turn up in dried pepper arrangements, chili powder and paprika, so check the wreath as well as the pantry.
Neither one is an Arizona speciality, and the biology here is the same as elsewhere. The difference is that a warm closet or pantry keeps them active more of the year.
Are palo verde beetles a problem?
Mostly just a shock. The palo verde root borer is a black to dark brown longhorn beetle about three inches long, with long antennae and a collar of spines. Adults emerge around June and July, fly at night, do not eat, and live a month at most. They rarely mean to enter a home. Lights draw them to doors and windows, and they sometimes hit the glass hard enough to startle you.
The grubs are the part with some bite. According to University of Arizona Extension, they spend three or more years feeding on roots of palo verde, mesquite, citrus and many other broadleaf trees, growing to three or four inches. Large branches dying back can be a sign. Extension is candid here: there are really no effective control measures, since insecticides cannot reach a grub inside a root. A healthy tree usually outgrows the damage, and University of Arizona entomologists note stress is more often what kills the tree. Keep it watered properly, and treat it as a tree-care issue rather than a pest visit.

June bugs and green fruit beetles in Tempe yards
The big metallic beetle that buzzes like a small drone is the green fruit beetle, also called a figeater or western green June beetle. It is about 1 1/4 inches long and active in the daytime, and it mobs soft ripe fruit such as figs, peaches, plums and tomatoes in summer. Its grubs live in compost, manure and piles of lawn clippings. Extension advises against pesticides on adults, as the fruit is ripe or nearly so.
What works: pick fruit as it ripens, bag individual fruit, turn compost often and remove clipping piles. Beetles that swarm porch lights at night are usually other June beetle species, and turning off the light is the fix.

How Kai identifies a beetle problem
Identification comes first, and a sealed bag with one specimen is the most useful thing you can have ready. Indoors, Kai looks for:
- Fuzzy larvae, shed skins and patch-shaped damage along carpet edges, closets and under furniture.
- Old nests of birds, rodents, bees or wasps, plus spider webs and dead insects around lights and vents.
- Pantry shelves, pet food, spices and dried arrangements.
Outdoors, he checks lights, compost, clipping piles and what the beetles were found on.
What does beetle control include?
A beetle job is detective work, and treatment is the smaller part. Size narrows it quickly. Pantry beetles run about 1/10 to 1/7 inch, and carpet beetle adults are round, about 1/8 inch, and usually found on windowsills because they fly toward light. A few adults at a window are no cause for alarm unless larvae are feeding somewhere.
- Naming the beetle from a specimen, by size, shape and where it turned up.
- A source hunt through closets, rugs, pet food, spices and dried arrangements.
- Checks of old nests, webs and dead insects around lights and vents.
- Sticky or pheromone traps where they help locate a source.
- Spot treatment labeled for carpet beetles, only if larvae are active.
- A cleanup and storage plan you can follow.
Beetle control in Tempe, AZ: what each option does
- Cleaning and source removal. The main control for both carpet and pantry beetles. Vacuum, wash fabrics hot, discard infested food. Takes effort, and it is the part that works.
- Sealed storage. Airtight containers for food, wool and furs. Cedar chests are not reliable.
- Freezing or heating items. Delicate fabric can be sealed and frozen for two weeks, or heated, in place of washing.
- Spot treatment for carpet beetles. Products labeled for carpet beetles, on carpet edges and cracks, and never on clothing or bedding.
- Traps. Sticky and pheromone traps help you locate a source and do not control one.
- Not recommended. Insecticides in pantries, and any treatment for palo verde beetles.
Mothballs, pantry sprays and the label
Moth balls, flakes and crystals are pesticides too, and UC IPM says paradichlorobenzene products labeled for carpet beetles belong in airtight containers, away from children, pets, unwrapped food and cooking utensils. Keep them off plastic buttons and hangers, which they can soften. A closet is generally not airtight, so scattering them there misses the point. In food areas, UC IPM says insecticides are not recommended for any pantry pest, and that spraying near food may pose more risk than the pests. Whatever is applied, Arizona's written notice rule gives you the target pest and trade name.
From phone call to finished visit
- Describe the beetle or send a clear look at one so Kai can say whether a visit makes sense.
- On site, he follows the signs back to the source.
- He tells you what you can clean, discard or store differently yourself.
- If treatment is warranted, he applies a labeled product to the right cracks and edges, reading the label first and keeping clear of pet beds, toys and kids' rooms.
- He tells you what to watch for over the next several weeks.
Carpet and pantry beetles fade once the source is gone, though adults that had already hatched may appear for a few weeks. Pantry shelves deserve airtight storage for several months afterward.

How is a beetle job priced?
- Whether a visit is needed at all.
- How far the source has spread through rooms, closets or stored items.
- The amount of carpet or fabric to inspect and treat.
- Whether another pest, such as nesting rodents or wasps, is feeding the beetles.
In Tempe, most of the bill follows the search. One bad bag on a pantry shelf may need only a phone call. Carpet beetles spread more quietly, so a home with wool rugs, stored fur or years of lint under heavy furniture takes longer to inspect. Old bird, wasp or rodent nests in eaves or attics add a step, since they feed larvae. Furniture or pillows stuffed with hair or feathers cannot be fixed by spraying the outside, and fumigation is a separate specialist service. Bulk pet food adds another search point, and a second infested room means the source is still hidden.

- He is the owner, so you get his judgment and not a script.
- Reviewers mention a reminder the day before and an on-time arrival, so a pantry or closet can be emptied and ready.

Kai works from Tempe across the East Valley, including beetle control in Chandler, Mesa and Gilbert, as well as pest control in Tempe itself. Tiny brown insects walking in a line are ants, so ant control is the better read. A dark, flat, fast insect at night may really be a roach, which falls under cockroach control.

Beetle Control: common questions
Which beetles do Tempe households run into most?
Indoors, usually carpet beetles and pantry beetles such as cigarette, drugstore and sawtoothed grain beetles. Outdoors in summer, palo verde root borers and green fruit beetles get the most attention, because of their size and noise. A clear photo or a beetle in a sealed bag lets Kai tell you which it is, often before a visit.
Could a palo verde beetle hurt me or my dog?
It can bite if a finger, toe or nose gets close to its head, but University of Arizona Extension calls it relatively harmless otherwise. Adults do not eat and rarely enter homes on purpose. They end up at doors because light attracts them. Move one aside with a broom and keep pets from pawing at it. Poison Help is 1-800-222-1222 for concerns.
How do I track down the source of carpet beetles?
Look for fuzzy larvae and bristly brown cast skins, then work outward. Check under furniture, along carpet edges, in closets, in stored wool or fur, in pet hair buildup and in old wasp, bird or rodent nests. Damage shows as one large patch, not scattered holes. Kai also checks light fixtures and vents, where dead insects pile up as food.
What are the big noisy green beetles on my fig tree?
Those are green fruit beetles, also called figeaters or western green June beetles. They are about 1 1/4 inches long, metallic and active by day, and they feed on soft ripe fruit in summer. Extension does not recommend pesticides on adults because fruit is nearly ripe. Pick fruit promptly and turn or remove compost and clippings where grubs live.
Are the beetles in my pantry a pest-control problem?
Usually not a spraying one. UC IPM says insecticides are not recommended for any pantry pest. The fix is finding the infested package, discarding it, vacuuming shelves and moving food into tight-lidded containers. Check pet food, spices and dried arrangements too. Call Kai if beetles keep appearing after that and you cannot find where they are coming from.
