Tiny tan roaches at the kitchen sink are not the same animal as the big ones in the tub, and they need the opposite approach. As any honest bug exterminator will tell you, a German roach population lives in your walls and appliances, feeds at your stove and has never been outside. Nothing that stops at the foundation will reach it.

Small roaches in the kitchen: is it a German roach?

Adults reach about half an inch, tan to light brown, with two short dark stripes behind the head. You usually see them after lights go out. Other signs include pepper-like droppings along cabinet seams and hinges, a musty smell in a heavy case, and small beige egg cases about 1/4 inch long. Seeing them in daylight often means crowded harborage.

Check before you assume. The outdoor field roach looks close but has a dark stripe between the eyes. If yours are large and reddish, you want standard cockroach control instead, since those arrive from the sewer.

Why German roaches thrive in Tempe apartments and rentals

This roach does not care about the desert. It wants warmth around 70 to 75°F, water and darkness, and a kitchen supplies all of them year-round regardless of what it is doing outside. University of Arizona Extension notes they tend to hide in electric appliances, which is what makes them hard to reach. Refrigerator motors, microwaves, dishwashers and coffee makers are all prime spots.

They arrive by hitching a ride in cardboard, grocery bags, used furniture and secondhand appliances. In a multi-unit building near ASU, shared plumbing runs let them move through walls. That is why move-in day is the time to check a rental's sink cabinet, before your boxes go in.

Small dabs of gel bait in a crack for German cockroach treatment

What a German roach program includes

One visit rarely ends this. A German roach job is a short program of inspection, baiting, monitoring and at least one return, because egg cases protect the next generation from the first round. Kai starts by finding where roaches shelter, which is usually closer to warmth and food than people expect. The plan covers every room with activity, and it sets out what you do between visits. Your part is real. Bait works when roaches have less else to eat and when nobody scrubs it out of the cracks.

  • A flashlight inspection of hinges, stove edges, sink cabinets and appliance motors.
  • Sticky monitors to map activity and give a starting count.
  • Gel bait in small dabs inside cracks, on the label's terms.
  • A growth regulator or void dust where the infestation calls for it.
  • A prep and upkeep list for counters, pet food and trash.
  • Return checks to read monitors and change bait if roaches refuse it.

Is gel bait better than spraying?

For this roach, yes, in most kitchens. UC IPM describes gel baits placed as small dabs in cracks as very effective, and baits as giving better control than sprays. Here is how the choices compare:

  • Gel bait in cracks and hinges. Reaches roaches where they shelter, and works on a slow timeline. Deposits harden and need renewing. Some populations have learned to avoid certain bait formulas, so a change of bait can matter.
  • Insect growth regulator. Disrupts development as an add-on. Useful in heavy populations and never a solo fix.
  • Dust in wall voids. Reaches hollow spaces behind outlets and cabinets. Slower to show results.
  • Sprays. A quick knockdown, then scattering. Spraying near bait can also reduce how well it works, so any spray has to stay away from placements.
  • Foggers. Not useful. They do not reach the crevices, and they push survivors deeper.

Sticky monitors are not a treatment, but they are how you know whether anything is working.

German cockroach control in Tempe, step by step

  1. Kai looks at hinges, sink cabinets, stove edges, appliance motors and any gap around pipes, using a flashlight.
  2. Sticky monitors go down where roaches forage, which shows the worst areas and gives a starting count.
  3. He places bait in small amounts in the cracks where they shelter, following label directions and keeping it out of reach of pets and kids.
  4. You keep food sealed and leave the bait in place while it works.
  5. A follow-up checks the monitors, renews hardened bait and goes after anything missed.

Bait may take a week or longer to show results. Young roaches hatching from protected egg cases mean a second round is normal, so plan on follow-up visits and not a single trip. Numbers should fall steadily over several weeks, and the monitors will show it.

Keep two habits while the bait works. Leave the treated cracks alone when you wipe down, and keep pet food sealed overnight, because a roach with an easy meal has less reason to find bait. Vacuuming behind the stove pulls out droppings, shed skins and egg cases, which is the one kind of deep cleaning that helps at any stage.

Pricing a German roach treatment

  • Number of rooms with activity, and whether it has reached a bathroom or bedroom.
  • Whether neighboring units need treating too.
  • How much clutter stands between the bait and the cracks.
  • The number of follow-up visits needed.

In Tempe, housing type sets most of the variables. A detached house can usually be handled on its own, while an apartment near campus may need the units on either side treated to hold any gain. Older kitchens with loose cabinet backs and worn tile edges take longer to bait than a tight newer one. Heavy populations mean more bait, more monitors and more return trips, and roaches in bedrooms widen the treatment area. Store sprays used beforehand can add a visit, since bait belongs in unsprayed cracks. Ask for the likely number of visits up front.

Restaurant and commercial kitchens are a different scope. Kai will tell you on the phone whether that is something he takes on.

Who is responsible for roaches in a rental?

Arizona has a specific bed bug statute, A.R.S. 33-1319, and no matching one for roaches, so the general rules apply. A.R.S. 33-1324 requires a landlord to keep premises fit and habitable and common areas clean. A.R.S. 33-1341 requires a tenant to keep the unit clean and give prompt written notice of conditions needing action. Maricopa County's Environmental Health Code adds that the owner, occupant or person in control must take reasonable measures to prevent infestation. None of this settles a particular dispute, so read your lease and put notices in writing. Our post on who pays for pest control in an Arizona rental goes further.

Why Kekoa, a one-person business, suits this job

  • German roach work depends on follow-through, and with Kai the same person sees the kitchen every time.
  • Reviewers mention a reminder the day before and punctual arrival, which helps when you have prepped a kitchen.
  • Monthly customers report receiving a list of the chemicals used.
  • He explains prevention, and with German roaches your part of the job matters.
  • One long-time customer reports rates have not gone up, which counts on work that can run to several visits.
  • Kai is the owner, so questions about what to clean or leave alone go to the person who placed the bait.

Renting? If you are unsure who arranges treatment in your building, sort that out with your landlord early. Either can call Kai to discuss scope.

German Cockroach Control: common questions

How do German roaches multiply so fast?

They have the fastest development of the common pest roaches. A female carries an egg case holding about 30 young until a day or two before it hatches, which protects it from many treatments, and she can make a new case every few weeks. UC IPM puts one female's yearly potential at over 30,000. That is why a Tempe kitchen needs follow-up.

Why do grocery store sprays fail on German roaches?

Resistance is the main reason. German roaches have developed resistance to many insecticides in common sprays and aerosols. Sprays also scatter survivors into walls and neighboring rooms, and they can contaminate bait placements so roaches avoid them. Please stop spraying before Kai arrives. A kitchen sprayed the night before gives bait a harder start.

How should I get a kitchen ready for treatment?

Clear the counters, empty the cabinet under the sink, and wipe grease from around the stove. Store food in sealed containers, take out the trash and fix any drips. Vacuum up droppings and dead roaches if you can. Do not deep-clean after bait goes in, since scrubbing cracks removes it. Kai will tell you what matters for your kitchen.

Do roaches travel between apartment units?

Yes. They follow plumbing runs, electrical lines and shared wall voids, and they also ride in boxes, grocery bags and used appliances. One treated unit next to untreated neighbors can keep getting new roaches. If you rent near ASU or anywhere with shared walls, tell your landlord early, since treating adjoining units together gives a far better result.

Are those small roaches German or something else?

Look behind the head. German roaches have two short dark stripes there. Field roaches look similar but have a dark stripe between the eyes and normally live outdoors. Brown-banded roaches show pale bands across the wings and tend to hide in bedrooms, furniture and behind pictures. Bag one for Kai, since the species changes where bait goes.
